Hello, my name is Allie Mirsky and I am a junior at Muhlenberg College majoring in sustainability studies and minoring in public health and innovation and entrepreneurship. My whole life I have been very passionate about the environment, animals, people and society. My connection to nature has guided me through life. Sustainable living and embracing, appreciating, and respecting the planet are core values of mine. I have always been self-driven to better the environmental problems my generation is faced with and help future generations interact, sustainably coexist, and ultimately prosper with the environment around them. In the future I hope to create innovative sustainable solutions to preserve and protect our planet that enhances the quality of life for humans as well. Sustainable living and sustainable changes in peoples everyday lives can achieve this.

I am extremely passionate about the plastic pollution that chokes our oceans and the organisms deeply impacted by this pollution. Spending my summers in a Long Island beach town, I often take walks on the shore or swim in the ocean. However, each time I go to do this, I find myself not swimming with fish but rather colorful pieces and clear plastics floating up alongside me. When searching for shells on the beach, I am overcome by the horizon filled with trash dotting the sand. Because of these interactions with my environment, you will often find me hauling huge bags of trash off the beach, conducting my very own beach cleanups."" I have also helped start an annual local beach cleanup in my town. These small actions have aided in educating the public about the plastic epidemic threatening our planet.""

Although plastic pollution is a wicked problem, one can’t ignore the negative social, economic, and environmental consequences of plastic pollution. The cradle to grave cycle of plastic production is not sustainable and is not beneficial to our planet, people, or profits in the long term. My hope is that through innovation and entrepreneurship I will ultimately be able to help turn the tide and provide sustainable solutions/initiatives that create a healthier planet for all organisms. I understand that ideas are easy and implementation is hard but that is why I believe working in collaboration with others and listening to others is key to successfully turn this tide. For me, my drive is not to become rich or famous and own a mansion with a Ferrari sitting in my driveway, this is not fulfilling. I feel most authentic when I know I am helping to protect the environment while simultaneously improving human well-being, thus my fire is constantly fueled by the constant influx of depressing environmental news as it gives me more reason to create, learn, and take action where my passion lies. My hope for this blog is to explore sustainable living and how the human is intrinsically connected to nature and why it is worth protecting and how to do this. ""
